ALICE ROSE
Australian artist Alice Rose could draw long before she studied ceramics. Her training was traditional and technically focused, giving her experience in a wide range of construction methods and an understanding of the importance of functional design. Her background as a painter in commercial art and signwriting taught her the techniques of creating three-dimensional illusion.
In 2005, shortly after moving to New Zealand from England, where she had lived for 30 years, Rose began making her trademark Mirage Vases.
The Mirage Vases originated from a drawing that explored form and pattern through light and shadow. Each vase investigates the relationship between perspective and perception. By rendering a two-dimensional image in three-dimensional form, the Mirage Vases seem to exist in a dimension of their own - neither entirely two- nor three-dimensional, they resist belonging to either.
