THE LAND THAT SPEAKS

THE LAND THAT SPEAKS

The land is never silent. In Te Matau-a-Māui, voices echo through the hills, plains, and sky - carried in whispers of wind, murmurs of soil, and stories embedded in stone. This exhibition brings together a series of works that explore the intersection of human and non-human, where memory and myth entwine with the physical landscape.

Each painting transforms the familiar into the otherworldly. A rainbow arches over Rongokako, bending into the earth as both omen and bridge. A celestial hook descends upon Kohinurākau, tethering the sky to the hillside. An eclipse casts shadow over the green swell of land, pausing the rhythms of day and night. These images move between what is seen and what is intuited, offering glimpses of the land as a living archive - a place where histories, cosmologies, and personal memory converge.

Grounded in Te Matau-a-Māui yet reaching beyond the tangible, the works are not landscapes in the traditional sense. They are invitations: to listen, to sense, to remember. They remind us that place is never merely backdrop - it is participant, storyteller, and kin.
