NICK WILKEY

NICK WILKEY

Born in England and raised in Te Mata-A-Maui (Hawkes Bay), Aotearoa New Zealand, Nick uses art as a medium for traversing his personal experiences, imbuing each work with emotion, story and an essence of the sacred. At once local and universal, Nick’s work poses questions that seldom need answers, leaving the viewer to complete/contemplate the meaning behind the image.

Nick’s work draws on his 5 years of study as an architect, drawing from a variety of artistic, literary and narrative influences. Often playing with depth and perspective Nick uses the line and the shadow to explore the space of the canvas, both deepening and compressing the spatial depth.

Nick often uses paint and pastel on canvas to explore themes around personal and collective narratives, allegory and the nature of the human condition. Nick has also created large-scale spatial and architectural installation works that are equally narratively rich. His works are a little like poems, laden with symbolism and open to multiple interpretations.

Nick's work has been published in AD (Architectural Design), a global architecture and design journal.

As an aside to his fine art practice, he currently undertakes creative direction for events and festivals across Aotearoa, designing and building objects and experiences of scale and intrigue.
