NIC TUCKER
Dunedin School of Art graduate, Nic Tucker, uses an age old Japanese technique to produce delightful woodcut prints of iconic New Zealand landscapes. The process involves making a series of individual blocks for each colour which she inks and runs through a press, careful to register layer over layer. The final key or drawing block is printed over the top of the colours to make sense of the whole image.
Tucker is an accomplished artist who has won awards for her painting, 3D work, photography and drawing. She taught art at secondary level for 22 years, but now works full time as a print maker based in Hawkes Bay.
Tucker acknowledges her heritage as the source of her inspiration: “I am from Ngai Tahu and Ngati Kahungunu descent. I was born in Invercargill and lived all around NZ to the top in Ahipara (west of Kaitaia). I understand the importance of land and its connection to the people which is a big inspiration for my woodcuts.”
