OUR LAND CUTS DEEP

OUR LAND CUTS DEEP

Nic Tucker's woodblock relief prints capture the majesty of our landscape from the cliffs around Cape Kidnappers to the rolling hills of Mt Erin, as well as intimate spots treasured by locals, such as Tongoia Beach. These magnificent, limited edition, woodblock prints of iconic Hawkes Bay scenes are memorable reminders of places that hold a special place in our hearts.

Japanese woodblock printing is a very old art form that gives rise to expressive and subtle variations that have the ability to make each print unique. While it is a simple process, to do it well requires great skill. The print maker must cut into the wooden 'plate' at precise angles and depth. Any slip of the carving tools can ruin the plate. Then there is the skill of thinking in reverse, so the areas you carve out are where the ink doesn't sit. The printmaker builds up layers of colour and depth using multiple plates that must go through a press at a consistent pressure and with precise alignment. Results will vary depending on how the block is inked, what colours are chosen and how much pressure is applied.

Local artist, Nic Tucker, is a master of this technique. Her very affordable, popular prints are shown in galleries throughout the country. We are delighted to be presenting this hugely impressive body of work, most of which has been created especially for this show. Her husband Craig works alongside her and makes frames for her prints. Together they are a formidable team.
