AEROPHILIA
The term Aerophilia relates to a passion for travel and everything associated with it. On that basis Michele Bryant most definitely qualifies as an "Aerophile". Originally from Hawke's Bay, born and bred in Kereru, Bryant has spent a considerable period of her adult life in Wellington. Her work has to do with a sense of belonging, of tūrangawaewae. Her playful aeroplane and glider symbols embody journeys both real and imagined, exploring the excitement of new horizons and the tension of staying grounded.
Maps feature frequently in Bryant's work, most notably in her striking Travelling Man series. Here, outlines of suited figures are filled in with maps of famous cities such as London, Paris, New York as well as the likes of Auckland, Wellington, Napier and Dunedin. Bryant's most recent innovation to this series is to have them printed onto painted canvas. This format allows the prints to be hung without framing and rolled into a tube for transporting, making them ideal for travellers wanting to take a stunning piece of art back home with them.
