TO WALK IN BEAUTY
With beauty below me, may I walk.
With beauty above me, may I walk.
With beauty all around me may I walk.
In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, lively, may I walk.
To walk in beauty is the translation of the Navajo Beauty prayer. it means to notice and respect the scaredness of life and to walk in harmony with it.
Reading this poem creates a stillness and you can’t help pausing, taking a breath and noticing the beauty of nature and our world.
It is this that I hope to capture when painting.
I have been very lucky to have grown up in a beautiful garden in the middle of the picturesque Hawkes Bay landscape. And from a very early age the feeling of hope, belonging and peace that this gave me has been a barometer against which I subconsciously measure whatever comes at me in my life.
And from which I draw a huge amount of strength and am always wanting to represent whether it be in a painting or a meal.
