Oil on canvas
103 x 123 cm
A playful composition of mother and baby, both with similar shaped hoods that represent a replication of genetics or something else. The mothers hood seems to be an extension of her brain but why a fish tank? Is this a symbol of her thoughts that are fluid, darting and alive or does it hint of a mind dulled by an over-use of artificial intelligence. Maybe it is simply a family aquarium that hums quietly imparting calm and quiet observation.
The baby, happily nestled into the mother’s front pocket usually occupied by a cellphone, symbolises intimacy and connection in an age of constant distraction.
Her earrings are planet Earths, hanging from moons which is a literal interpretation of loving her child to the moon and back. Heart-shaped shoulders and a deep buttoned floral fabric were inspired by my memory of a childhood batch mattress and represents a soft place to fall.
Comfort, nostalgia and maternal devotion all stitched together in a witty portrait.
