APPROACHING CONSEQUENCE
With a well established career of over 20 years as an artist, Approaching Consequence, is Auckland-based Andrew Barns-Graham's the first show in Hawkes Bay. He is joined by a fellow Aucklander, British-born Kit Rennie, whose gravity defying Orbit Bowls have a wonderful stylised futuristic aesthetic quality sympathetic to that of Barns-Graham's work.
Barns-Graham's hard-edged, portraits painted in oils have titles that suggest they may be multicultural archetypes. He presents them as pairs, each with a shared landscape that also work as a group.
The effect of seeing the portraits together, with a single horizon line and similar palette, allows the viewer to connect to the characters as if in conversation. These otherworldly beauties face off with each other and with the viewer. We are invited to consider the characters in relation to each other as well as to ourselves... now and our future selves. How will they judge us?
