ANNA EVANS

ANNA EVANS

Anna Evans, born in Rochdale, England, in 1983, migrated to New Zealand in 1994. Her work is deeply influenced by the vibrant contrasts of her new environment compared to the grey skies of Manchester, sparking a fascination with natural colours, light, and ecosystems. After graduating from Elam School of Fine Arts in 2004, she pursued a career as a children’s book illustrator, games designer, arts educator, and painter. Now based in the rural Far North, Anna is a solo parent, nurturing her creativity alongside her vegetable and flower gardens.

Anna’s latest works, inspired by her garden, are layered acrylic paintings that evoke complex, dreamlike landscapes. Starting with earthy, bruised tones, she builds textures and forms through dashes, scratches, and transparent washes, creating depth and hidden pathways. Jewel-like flowers bloom amidst imagined gardens, reflecting themes of renewal, nurture, and transformation. This series marks a fresh departure, drawing from the profound experiences of early parenthood and matrescence, blending meticulous detail with a sense of wonder and manifestation.
