A SEAT AT MY TABLE
Everyone is familiar with the saying “A seat at my table”. It is a symbol of coming together and sharing a meal, of having a voice, an opinion. Here in my solo show I invite the viewer to indulge their senses in photo-realistic subjects that are ubiquitous, objects that resonate in our memory that we can reminiscence about, of collectables we all know whether through our Grandparents, parents or items we once used.
It is a continuation of my previous body of work where I have delved into my vast collections of old milk bottles, Crown Lynn, enamelware and general bric-a-brac housed in cabinets throughout my house.
Along with these items that invoke nostalgia there is a cross over with a second body of work connecting with the symbolism imbued in objects beyond the literal. Grapes that can represent wisdom, truth or fertility and the wine of life, they also symbolize Bacchus and Dionysus and the dangers of debauched behavior. There is a large cooked crayfish symbolic of temptation, or quite simply these subjects can remind us of summer, the bounty of the Aotearoa and good times.
