Kaye McGarva’s paintings of shadowy creases are explorations into illusion, perception and the embodied nature of vision. Her paintings can be said to blur the boundaries between abstraction and realism. Without reference to subject or scale, McGarva’s paintings have a seemingly uncanny aspect, which draws the viewer in. She sees the viewer’s engagement and speculation on what they are seeing as an integral part to completing the artwork.
Kaye graduated from Ideaschool in 2014 as Top Research Student. She has been a finalist multiple times in the National Contemporary Art Awards, the Parkin Drawing Prize, the Wallace Art Awards, the Molly Morpeth Canaday Award and the Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award. She has participated in exhibitions in Brussels and the Netherlands, as well as had her work shown in London, and art fairs throughout Europe.
