RUTH PHIPPS

My paintings are inspired by the small, easily overlooked details of everyday built spaces doorways, windows, shadows, corners, and surfaces we often pass without noticing. By focusing closely on these fragments, I explore how light, shadow, texture, and atmosphere shape our experience of place.

Rather than presenting a complete scene, I use cropped views and fragments to create spaces that feel familiar yet slightly uncertain. They invite a slower way of looking, encouraging quiet reflection and an awareness of how seeing can be connected to touch, memory, and physical presence.

The paintings develop through an intuitive process of adjustment and discovery as I respond to subtle changes in tone, surface, and light. Through these close observations of architectural details, my work reflects on our relationship with the everyday environment and the richness that can be found in what is usually overlooked.
